in los angeles thanks. >>> hundreds of volunteers who you are ared to new york after superstorm sandy are settling into their home away from home. when they are not helping with recovery efforts they are recouperating on the uss wright. it is equiped with sleeping quarters and a common area. anna is live with an inside look. >> hello everybody at home. finding space for the thousands of volunteers who stepped up in the aftermath of superstorm sandy has proven to be a tall order. that's where this ship comes in, the ss wright. it is now home away from home for a couple hundred volunteers from the american red cross and fema core. they are staying together and eating together and playing games and watching sports together, yet it is in patriotic living quarters. and they are manning the 27 disaster recovery centers set up in the tri-state area. many are young and even just right out of high school. it is an interesting dynamic as many of the red cross volunteers are older. retired health care workers. it can be trying. being around storm victims and devastation at times is emotionally e
. the other case is from new york, it challenges the defense of marriage act that requires the government to deny federal benefits to legally married gay couples. it was passed in 1996 and signed by president clinton. reaction in san francisco's castro district included a range of emotions. yesterday's decision means same sex couples in california must put marriage plans on hold. they could have started marrying pleadly if the court denied review. activists say they feel some momentum from the november elections. >> three states legalized same sex marriage just a month ago. the tide is shifting. >> i want it to be tackled. i want to get married and i want to be married in any state. >> many people say they are happy the court will address the issue but they say they understand that the possibility the ruling may go against the very thing they are fighting for. >> opponents of same sex marriage believe the justices will see things there way. >> we are confident that the court is going to up hold the right of the people to amend their own constitution. >> the man who wrote proposition
, exactly. so to you let's go to the defense of marriage act case. and this came out of new york. first of all explain how the defense of marriage act worked and how did this one case involving an 83-year-old woman in edie wind sore-- windsor raise the issue. >> well, the challenge here is to a provision in the defense of marriage act, section 3. and that defines for all federal purposes marriage is between one man and one womanment and by doing that it affects more than a thousand federal laws, everything from tax laws to social security and health and welfare benefits. the defense of marriage act was challenged by edie windsor from new york. she had a partner for over 40 years. they were married in 2007 in canada, a new york recognized their marriage when miss windsor's partner, her spouse died. her spouse left her entire estate to edie windsor. because of the defense of marriage act edie windsor was left with almost a 400,000 dollar federal estate tax that someone who was the spouse of an opposite sex coup weill no have had to pay. so their defense of marriage act can being challenge
